Frequently asked questions about the gross-net calculator
How accurate is the calculation?
Wage tax is calculated according to the official 2026 programme flowchart of the Federal Ministry of Finance (for 2025 according to the 2025 flowchart); all 516 reference values published by the ministry for 2026 are recalculated in the tests. Social insurance follows the published contribution rates and contribution ceilings. Individual allowances, benefits in kind or special cases are not covered by the calculator – your employer's payroll is decisive.
What is the difference between gross and net?
Gross is the agreed wage before deductions. Net is what reaches the account – after wage tax, solidarity surcharge, church tax where applicable and the employee shares of health, care, pension and unemployment insurance.
Why does the same gross wage leave different amounts?
It depends on the tax class, church tax liability, child allowances, the federal state and your health insurer’s additional contribution. Two people on the same gross salary can therefore end up with clearly different net amounts.
What are employer costs?
On top of the gross salary come the employer's social insurance shares plus the U1 (sickness), U2 (maternity) and insolvency levies. That is what a company actually pays per month.
Can I save the result?
Yes – with a projectxy account you save positions as staff planning, compare pay rises and carry hourly costs into your quote calculation.
